Why You Should Consider Children’s Dentistry

Children's dentistry starts very early in life. Children should be taken in for their first visit to the dentist before they reach the age of one. This timeline is according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Parents are often surprised to find out that children are supposed to be taken to the dentist that early in life, but the data backs it up. Children who are taken to the dentist before their first birthday are less likely to have major dental issues coming up. Children start having cavities around the age of two, and 25 percent of them deal with tooth decay before they reach the age of four.

The best time to start children's dentistry is when the first set of incisors begin to appear. That gives the dentist an opportunity to make sure they are developing correctly and it also sets the stage for a lifetime of excellent oral health. Taking proper care of baby teeth is very important since they ensure the permanent teeth are properly aligned when they emerge.

Why children's dentistry makes a difference

1. Specialized care

When a child is taken to a pediatric dentist, they get specialized care. The dentists and assistants in a pediatric clinic all have lots of experience dealing with kids, and they have the skills needed to keep the child relaxed throughout the process. A pediatric dentist makes going to the clinic a fun experience for the child which makes them more comfortable with the idea of getting dental treatments.

A visit to the dentist can be a scary thing for people of all ages. It can be even more frightening for young children who find themselves in an unfamiliar place with strangers prodding them. Having a kid-friendly environment is essential to make the child feel comfortable.

2. Better trained specialists

A pediatric dentist has to get additional training that other dentists do not. They spend a total of three additional years in dental school, learning about the growth of baby teeth, the psychology of children and how to deal with children with special needs.

3. Make it a fun excursion

Pediatric dentists make going to the dentist a lot more fun for kids. It is common practice to find all sorts of toys, video games and treats at the clinic. The waiting rooms are loaded with these things to help children relax before their treatments. Pediatric dentists also give rewards to well-behaved children after treatments.

Taking care of baby teeth

While regular visits to the dentist help to ensure that a child's teeth remain healthy, parents still need to clean the kid's teeth each day properly. When the first set of teeth begin to appear, a soft-bristled toothbrush with no toothpaste is enough to clean teeth.

When the child reaches the age of two, parents can start using a grain-sized amount of toothpaste to clean the teeth.
