When Do Pediatric Dentists Recommend Dental Sealants?

Do you know when a pediatric dentist will make a recommendation for kids to have dental sealants placed on their teeth?

It is necessary for kids to gently brush their teeth at least twice a day to remove any plaque or tartar buildup. They should also floss at least once a day to take out hidden foods that might be stuck between their teeth. However, sometimes it is hard for them to clean every surface of their teeth completely.

A buildup of plaque and tartar lead to cavities. If your children are not getting all bacteria or buildup from their mouths, then there is good possibility that a cavity can form in their teeth.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a way to protect a child’s teeth from developing cavities. A dental sealant for kids requires a pediatric dentist to apply a thin coating of special plastic to the child’s teeth. It protects the teeth from any outside elements that can cause cavities.

This thin coating of sealant does not mean that the child does not have to brush their teeth anymore. Rather, it gives them another layer of protection. Dental sealants can be used to protect baby teeth as well as primary teeth.

According to the American Dental Association, sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by nearly 80 percent in molars.

How do sealants work?

Cavity treatment for kids is essential, especially for younger kids who may find it difficult to brush their teeth properly. Not all children will brush their teeth after a late-night snack. Also, the number of sugary drinks available subjects your child’s teeth to a constant barrage of harm.

When sealants are placed on a child’s teeth, it is no longer possible for food particles, plaque and bacteria to cling to the teeth. The barrier stops these harmful elements from damaging the teeth and prevents cavities.

When are dental sealants recommended?

A pediatric dentist will often recommend sealants for children who are more susceptible to tooth decay and cavities. This usually occurs when the child is about seven or eight years old.

A dentist will also recommend dental sealants for kids once their permanent molars begin to grow. Children at high risk of developing cavities during this time.

These sealants can last up to 10 years, so your child’s teeth will stay protected until adulthood.

Would your child benefit from dental sealants?

If your child is prone to developing cavities, then they may need sealants to help protect their teeth. Moreover, if your child’s molars are growing into place, then sealants can help keep these new teeth strong.
